PC’s, (desktops and laptops) can appear to be straightforward when you attempt to set them up, but it can be tricky sometimes.
Let’s have a look at the standard process.
1. Unbox the PC
Carefully unpack the PC and all its accessories, such as the power cable, mouse, keyboard, and user manuals. Set up the PC on a flat, stable surface.
2. Connect Peripherals
For desktops, plug in the monitor, keyboard, mouse, keeping other peripherals you may need for later (e.g., printer, speakers).
Ensure the PC is plugged into a power source.
3. Power On the PC
Press the power button on the PC. The system will begin to boot up and start the Windows setup process.
4. Select Region and Language
Once Windows starts, you’ll be prompted to select your region, language, and keyboard layout. Choose the appropriate options.
5. Connect to the Internet
Choose a Wi-Fi network or connect the PC to a wired Ethernet connection to set up internet access. You’ll need an active internet connection for updates and account setup.
6. Sign In Options
Microsoft’s trying very hard to ensure we use their accounts to log in to the pc. Typically, if you don’t have one, you’ll need to create one. In saying this, a lot of clients don’t want to be forced by Microsoft to use their online accounts, and would prefer to create a local account without a Microsoft account. This can be done, but its a little more tricky.
7. Set Up Security Options
Set up a password, PIN, or biometric authentication (fingerprint, face recognition) to secure your device.
8. Choose Privacy Settings
Windows will ask for your privacy preferences, including location tracking, personalized ads, and diagnostic data. You can adjust these settings based on your preferences. In most cases, only the location requirement is recommended.
9. Install Updates and Drivers.
Windows will check for and install the latest updates, which might take some time. It’s important to allow these updates to ensure your system is secure and running smoothly. If you would like to review these yourself, go to the Windows icon / Settings / Update & Security / Windows update.
10. Install Software
At this point, you can install your software. My-Tech breaks down software into core software and additional software. This might include utilities such as Acrobat Reader and software such as Office. If software like Outlook is used, we’d setup email accounts.
11. Customize Settings
Personalize your desktop background, theme, and other settings to your liking. Typically, we work with the client and remove anything from the Start Menu / Tile Area that the client doesn’t need or use.
12. Create Backup and Restore Options
Set up a backup system (e.g., File History or OneDrive) to safeguard important files. Enable System Restore or create recovery media in case you need to restore the system.
13. Start Using Your PC
Once the setup is complete, your PC is ready to use!
That’s a simple overview of a sometimes complex task.
